The four basic qualities

The four basic qualities also referred to as the sensible qualities, and the elemental qualities are the four properties of hot, dry, cold, and wet. These understandings were used in humorism, and greek philosophy, and were also brought into occult philosophy, along with the classical four elements. Each one of these qualities has its own correspondences, that are unique to them, and work in accordance with the other three qualities in order to facilitate dynamic harmony within the paradigm. Hot, and cold are the primary qualities, or active qualities, and Dry and Wet are the secondary qualities, or passive qualities. Hot, and cold are the primaries, because they have the ability to go through the process of creating dryness, and wetness from their existence, or action. Hot, and cold are also sometimes referred to as first qualities, and dry, and wet are sometimes referred to as second qualities. Hot, and dry is connected to masculine energy, and yang energy. Cold, and wet is connected to feminine energy, and yin energy. Hot, and cold are on a polarity spectrum, and dry, and wet are also on a polarity spectrum. These two polarities spectrums intersect like a cross influencing each other with their actions, and their existence in different constructs, and environments. Aristotle was the person who associated these qualities to the elements. He understood that the element of fire was hot, and dry, the element of air was hot, and wet, the element of Earth was cold, and dry, and the element of water was cold, and wet. Through this understanding we could understand more about the metaphysical properties of each element, and how they relate to each other. By understanding these four qualities you will be able to understand the different interactions between constructs, and how you will be able to use one of these qualities to affect another one.

All physical, and spiritual constructs have these qualities in different amounts, and levels. All constructs have all four qualities within them though a couple of them will be more pronounced than others. By going through the process of introducing new, or even more of the same quality into a construct you will be able to increase, or decrease certain properties depending upon what you introduce into the constructs energy, and being. Which can help you to transmute constructs, or can help you rebalance an entity physically, or spiritually by correcting for what they need based on these qualities. This process of transmutation is much like the changing of the seasons, and works to change the established element by changing one of the qualities that makes up it, so that the whole of it’s being can change into something else. All the seasons also had their connections to the four basic qualities spring has the qualities of wet and hot, summer has the qualities of hot and dry, autumn has the qualities of dry and cold, and Winter their has the qualities of being cold and wet. All of these flow into each other in a very harmonic way which shows their connection, and their transmutation into each other.
These four qualities can also help to understand the process of figuring out the elemental metaphysical properties of a construct by examining the qualities that it expresses, so that you are able to Connected back to the elements. If you were to do this with something like the general concept of a sword, the sword would come out to be hot, and dry. the sword is hot because it is active while being swan, and it is dry, because it is solid, and has a hard to find form to it, which would make it come out to the element of fire, because of how the qualities connect.
In astrology the zodiac signs are also split up into combinations of the four qualities. Where the fire signs Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius are hot, and dry; the air signs Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius are hot, and wet; the water signs Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces are cold, and wet; the earth signs Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn are cold, and dry.
