Antimony, also called stibium, is a chemical element from the periodic table, which is a metallic metalloid. It is primarily found in the mineral stibnite, sometimes called antimonite. Antimony is toxic and carcinogenic, and because of this, it is very dangerous to handle.
The gray wolf of antimony is the alchemical name for antimony, also sometimes known as sacred lead and lead of the philosophers. Antimony was known as Lupus metallorurn, ‘wolf of the metals’, or the gray wolf in the medieval ages. It was a key material in alchemy in the attempts to purify gold. Antimony was known as the gray wolf because it could swallow up other metals like copper, tin, and lead, but it could not eat gold. Because of this connection, the wolf became connected to understanding man’s wild nature and free spirits.
